Local organizations offer river safety demonstrations

FRESNO, Calif.

Friday, demonstrators focused on ways to keep people safe near water. They explained the difference between life jackets and swimming aids. The safety program aims to prevent drowning through education.

Children's Hospital Central California partnered with the American Ambulance Star Rescue Team to offer safety tips. The rescue team warned while rivers look peaceful, there are dangerous currents beneath the surface. "First and foremost the most important thing is to learn to swim, second is the hazards you may encounter, this body of water being a perfect example that you can't see what dangers are lying beneath," said Star Rescue Team supervisor Michael Estrada.

The presentation was part of an ongoing safety program provided by Children's Hospital.
