The first day of the Tulare County Fair has kicked off successfully, with thousands enjoying fair food and rides. This year's patrons can expect more free entertainment than ever before.

The 2011 fair theme is "Just Plane Fun", a tribute to 100 years of naval aviation since the first plane landed in Tulare County a century ago.

"Being so close to Naval Air Station Lemoore we've got a big air show coming up next month, we really want to salute our military and thank them for all they do for the fair," Sara Mendez with the Tulare County Fair said.

Livestock competitions began early Wednesday morning. Many agriculture students were anxious to show the animals they've nurtured over the past year.

"I'm very excited with my heifer and I've been working all summer with her to get her ready to present," Future Farmers of America student Beatriz Anaya said.

This year's fair features more than 16 new carnival rides, more than 300 vendors and lots of free entertainment. More than 100,000 people are expected to walk the fairgrounds over the next five days.

The Fair will continue through Sunday evening.
