Harvest of early varieties began at the end of August. The American Pistachio Growers Organization calls the crop's condition and quality good, but says the harvest will be slightly smaller than last year's.
California accounts for more than 98 percent of U.S. pistachio production.

California walnut farmers are expecting their second-biggest crop ever this year.
Mild spring and summer weather has helped boost the quality of California-grown walnuts.
The California Walnut Commission says it anticipates the crop quality to be very high.
This year's crop is off about 4 percent from last year's record walnut crop but it's still the second-largest in history.
However, the cool summer is expected to delay harvest by about two weeks later than average.
