'Miss White Cane' crowned in N. Fresno

FRESNO, Calif.

Shaela Warkentin was crowned "Miss White Cane" during a White Cane Day festival in North Fresno.

The Valley Center for the Blind teamed up with Sam's Club to host the event, which serves as a way to raise awareness about services offered for the blind community.

Warkentin lost her vision after a crash in March. She said she's still getting used to a cane, and she's excited about her royal status.

"It makes people feel more independent having a cane than having to rely on someone to walk around," she said.

The White Cane Festival also included games and other activities, like a Halloween costume contest.
