CHP planning maximum enforcement over holiday weekend

FRESNO, Calif.

But the California Highway Patrol says drive carefully, because a simple mistake could land you in jail.

The CHP will start its maximum enforcement period beginning tonight at 6 p.m. and will continue through Monday night.

Basically that means all hands on deck, and officers around the state and locally will be looking for drivers who are being a danger to themselves and to others.

And with holiday parties and gatherings alcohol is most likely on the agenda and that's ok, but the CHP wants to remind you to drink safely and not to drive under any circumstance.

The drunk driving is a given, with a zero tolerance policy - but officers are reminding people of another common mistake as well: not wearing a seatbelt.

Last year, four people died during the Christmas holiday weekend in car accidents around California.

They'll also be doing the same thing New Years Eve weekend, which was even worse last year.

The CHP arrested more than 650 people last year for DUIs around the state.
