One-year-old child killed in Fresno crash

FRESNO, Calif.

The accident happened around 6 p.m. Friday night near Clinton and Fruit when the driver crashed into a tree with his two children in the back seat.

It happened just across the street from Fresno Fire Station Number Nine.

Bystanders rushed 13-month-old Michael Roberts to the station for help. Firefighters gave him oxygen, but were not able to save his life.

"You do everything you can for them. Those are definitely the worst -- the innocent kids. Sitting in the back seat. It just breaks your heart," said Graham Ice with the Fresno Fire Department.

Firefighters say the father told them he hit the tree after swerving to avoid a dog in the road. The little girl was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

Family members told Action News she had surgery today, but there's no update yet on her condition.
