The technology has just been installed at the El Portal Comprehensive Cancer Center on G Street near El Portal Drive in Merced.
Doctors at the center say the brachytheraphy treatment uses state of the art imaging, computer based planning and a high tech machine to deliver highly concentrated radiation.
The technology can cut treatment for breast cancer from weeks to just five days, and it keeps helps keep patients close to home.
"We want to make sure our patients are getting state of the art technology treatment here in Merced and they don't have to travel," Dr. Alireza Mahmoudieh said.
The treatment center has been working for two years to bring the new technology to the North Valley.
