Fresno County workers begin strike

FRESNO, Calif.

As of 6 a.m., thousands of workers with the Service Employees International Union, or SEIU, planned to strike.

The SEIU is upset with the Board of Supervisors over contract negotiations.

Union workers say the strike could have been avoided if the county agreed to reopen contract talks, but the county said the union failed to negotiate in good faith.

If the strike does indeed go through, getting a death certificate and application for burial permits could become a problem.

County workers who may be on strike are specially trained and certified, meaning no one can process the permits if they are not at work.

Funeral directors spent Friday scrambling to offer some assistance to try and come up with a contingency plan in the event of the strike.

Another stoppage will be at county libraries which are set to close if the strike occurs, but the county librarian says volunteers will help keep them open.
