Basketball Roundup: Bulldogs Win, Local Prep Playoffs

FRESNO, Calif.

Tyler Johnson scored 12 points, his second half three pointer kept the Bulldogs in front.But the story of the night ws Kevin Olekaibe, who scored a career-high 43 points. That's two off the program record set by Charles Bailey in 1974. Olekaibe made five three pointers and was 14-14 from the free throw line, Fresno State's 78-72 win.

As for the bulldog ladies, they absolutely steamrolled Hawaii on the road, 83-52 the final score. Bree Farley led the way with 20 points. Fresno State clinches at least a share of the WAC regular season title.

It was another TRAC versus C-MAC throwdown in Thursday's CIF Central Section quarterfinals, with the Buchanan boys hosting Edison. A packed house at Buchanan looked on as Edison tried to stay competitive. Philip Randels' three pointer led to an immediate timeout. But the second seeded Bears were just too much at home. Kyle Smith made a couple of big buckets down the stretch, and Player of the Year candidate Alex Fertig led the way with 30 points, as Buchanan rolled, 72-54.

Elsewhere in Division I action, top-seeded Bullard blew out Clovis East 93-46. They will host Central next Tuesday, after the Grizzlies' Murshid Randle got an offensive putback to go at the buzzer. Central beat Liberty of Bakersfield, 69-67.

Clovis West went on a late 22-5 run to beat Bakersfield on the road, 61-58. They will travel to Buchanan for Tuesday's semifinals. And in Division II, top-seeded San Joaquin Memorial advances with a 71-45 win over west of Bakersfield.
