FRESNO, Calif.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has proposed a rule for a program that provides fresh fruits and vegetables to elementary students. The plan would also prohibit dried, frozen, and other types of processed food. At the same time, the program would limit cooked fresh vegetables to only one serving a week.

Many dried fruit companies, including Sun-Maid Growers of California are against the plan.

The comment period for the proposed rule closes in April.
