Gas prices a boon for some vehicle sellers

FRESNO, Calif.

Those skyrocketing prices have Valley drivers looking for used vehicles which feature more miles per gallon.

Those who are selling them are finding out that they can get top dollar for their fuel-efficient vehicles.

Jerry Neff is looking to sell his daughter's 2003 Toyota Corolla Sport for about $7 thousand.

He's doing it the old-fashioned way, with "For Sale" signs on the back windows.

But Neff is also going online and using Craigslist to try to unload his car.

"Well my daughter put it up yesterday morning. And do I've gotten probably 7-8 calls," Neff said.

Neff says just about all of those calls involve questions related to the mileage.

Since his daughter's car gets 32-40 miles per gallon, he's got a better chance of earning top dollar for it.

"Actually I'm not surprised because the cost of gas is rapidly approaching $5 a gallon. I never would have thought that," he said.

Just to give you an idea of what the Craigslist market is like, you're going to have a very hard time finding a quality used car - what we would consider a gas saver - that's less than seven years old. Action News found 2-3 people that actually contacted us and sold their car within two days.

Local car dealerships like Mission Auto Sales are also seeing the same trend.

"When people are trying to trade in, say like a 2002 Honda Accord, you've got to pay a lot of money for them. I saw one the other day go for $6,400 dollars. These little cars, the market just went way up," longtime owner Eddie Reyna said.

Reyna bought a 2009 Toyota Camry on Monday and anticipates no problems finding a buyer by the end of the week.

But what he doesn't forsee is adding anymore of these gas saving cars to his lot, at least not for now.

"It's not worth it. You've got to pay too much money for them right now," he said.

Paying a little too much is exactly what Jerry Neff wants to hear, and the way gas prices are now he's got a good chance at driving up his own price in the next few weeks.
