According to the Department of Agriculture, only 14-cents of each dollar Americans spend on food goes back to the farm. The rest of the money, nearly 86 cents, goes toward marketing costs, like processing, packaging and transportation.
The U.S.D.A. says the farm share has decreased in the past couple of years.

Growers across the country are being warned about a new scam.
U.S.D.A. officials say a letter being sent to people in the ag industry appears to be from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The letter has the U.S.D.A. logo and asks business owners to share confidential numbers including financial information release forms.
Anyone who gets the letter is asked to contact the U.S.D.A.
