Go-carts used in distracted driving demonstration

FRESNO, Calif.

Members of Fresno County Friday Night Live held a distracted driving awareness event at Boomers in North Fresno where students tried to text and drive, some of them, doing better than others.

But organizers say cell phones are just part of the problem. "There's many distractions, not just texting. But also eating and putting on your makeup. And they should wake up at least 30 minutes earlier to all the necessary things and still get to their destination on time," said Edison High student Jasmine Castillo.

Numbers from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show distracted driving contributes to 16 percent of deadly crashes involving young people.

So while today's event may have looked like fun, the message is very serious.
