The child wandered through an open gate at Erin Williams Day Care in Northeast Fresno Wednesday morning.
Police say the gardener left the gate open -- about a dozen kids were playing outside when it happened.
Lt. Burke farrah said, "I think the quick action by the staff at the daycare is what prevented this from being more serious."
The toddler is recovering at Children's Hospital Central California.
