Currently, undocumented students at Metro State College of Denver pay an out of state tuition rate. Two weeks ago, the school decided to cut the rate by more than half, regardless of immigration status. They pay about $3,000 a semester -- down from close to $8,000.
The legality of that decision is now being questioned by the Attorney General's office, and school officials say they're not setting new rates, they're setting a new category.
"Colorado statutes create two classifications of students, residents and non-residents. And they have historically been within the non-resident category multiple rates of tuition," said Metro State president Stephen Jordan.
Metro State's policy, which is set to take effect this fall, could benefit an estimated 300 students.
