Artifacts uncovered in Visalia gas project

FRESNO, Calif.

The items were found in Visalia while a utility company was working on an emergency repair at Santa Fe near Main.

An old mill wheel, a railroad tie and several glass and porcelain bottles were found buried beneath the road.

Southern California Gas says the items date back to the late 19th and early 20th century.

They were able to date some of the items based on their shape, the style of the bottom and openings of the bottles.

The problem is, they're not exactly sure how all the items tie together.

"These items were found out of context. They were isolated items that were found in the backfill. That area had been dug previously, numerous times," archeologist Seth Roseburg said.

The artifacts will soon be handed over to the City of Visalia.
