Free movies, backpack giveaway in Downtown Fresno

FRESNO, Calif.

There are free movies at the water tower and a backpack giveaway to help deserving kids have the necessary supplies to succeed in the classroom.

City crews picked up more than a thousand backpacks from the United Way of Fresno County Friday morning.

Action News was there when volunteers filled each one with a bunch of classroom essentials during its back to school supply drive.

Middle to low-income kids and their families can pick them up at Friday night's Movies in the Park.

"We'll give them wristbands so that we can identify the wristband and give them a bag. Like last year they'll stand in line and they'll come through and as we talked last week they'll have big smiles on their faces. They'll have a new backpack to take to school with supplies. Our partners have just been wonderful," Michael Alexander, United Way of Fresno County CEO, said.

There will be misters out here to help keep people cool tonight. Those misters came at the last minute.

They city struck a deal with the owners to bring them here at a discounted price, but it's still important to remind everyone to wear loose fitted clothing. Bring and drink lots of water and maybe even bring an umbrella.
