Tim Deruyter describes his offense as being fast paced with tons of speed at the skill positions. His offensive coordinator agrees, saying it's a lot easier for college kids to go from a pro-style to a spread offense than the other way around.
"We've got to teach our guys how to play faster. There's not going to be a breaking of the huddle, you know get up to the line of scrimmage and make checks a the line and all that stuff. We're going to have to stress people with our tempo," said Bulldogs Offensive Coordinator Dave Schramm.
Tempo is exactly what the dogs have been working on during fall camp -- and the offensive line will be responsible for protecting the quarterback with less help. "Compared to the old offense. It's more or less the same thing. It's just calling it different names. So that's kind of the big thing is trying to retrain your mind which can be kind of difficult as an older guy. But besides that it's pretty much the same thing. We just have to keep going no huddle and keep going fast," said Offensive Lineman Austin Wentworth.
Less help at the line means more weapons on the perimeter for junior Quarterback Derek Carr. Big things are expected out of number four who was named 2012 Mountain West Pre-Season Offensive Player of the Year. "Just having coach Schramm come in and be able to learn from him. You know I've learned so much new things just from him which is amazing that I've learned so much from Coach Deruyter. That's made me a much better quarterback and you know I can't tell you how excited I am to get this thing going and finally go out there and play some games."
Senior Running Back Robbie Rouse who rushed for 1,500 yards last season is also welcoming the change. Rouse is familiar with the spread -- running it during his high school days in San Diego. "With it being the spread, it's going to take more people out of the box and when you know they run, there's going to be bigger running lanes for me than when we used to have eight man boxes. When there's more people in the box to run. So I'm excited about that."
Excited is a common word being used among the Bulldog offense. We'll just have to see how excited they are after their first game of the season against Weber State's defense on September first.
