Fresno Unified hands out school supplies for new year

FRESNO, Calif.

The district teamed up with Clear Channel Radio to distribute more than 50 book bags and other supplies on Saturday. Walgreens collected the items by asking customers to donate supplies at 16 stores across the city.

School officials chose Manchester Mall for the giveaway site because they recognized a need in the area.

"Many of the students that are free or reduced lunch live around the Manchester Mall area so we wanted to make this a central hub. Make it really accessible for parents who don't have cars to be able to come out and receive some items," Jamilah Fraser of Fresno Unified said.

The school supply drive was part of Fresno Unified's "Graduation Task Force", a community effort to reduce student drop-out rates.
