California growers could soon have unique varieties of wine grapes.

Researchers with the University of California are testing, and making progress, with more than 20 unusual varieties of the fruit. The university says their study is important because even though the San Joaquin Valley leads others parts of the world in production, it lags in terms of price.

Right now, California wines are made with fewer than ten types of grapes.
