Study: Possible link between antibiotics and IBD

FRESNO, Calif.

Researchers say the incidence of childhood IBD has doubled over the past ten years.

And they say those exposed to using antibiotics including Penicillin and Amoxicillin had an 84 percent higher chance of developing the condition.

The study also found that repeated courses of the antibiotics increased the risk of IBD even more.

Authors say curbing the use of these drugs in children could keep more children from developing IBD, which sometimes leads to the need for major abdominal surgery.
