New device texts farmers when cows are ill

New technology is allowing Swiss dairy cows to communicate with farmers by sending them a text message.

The New York Times reports farmers are testing the device with hopes of selling it. A wireless sensor is implanted internally and measures body heat. When the cow's body temperature rises, the device sends a text to the farmer's mobile phone.

Swiss farmers say the technology is needed because dairy cows, under growing stress to produce milk, are showing fewer visible signs of heat.
