It happened near Highway 99 and McKinley.
Paramedics arrived on the scene soon after an officer involved shooting wounded a man near McKinley and Highway 99.
"We have information that one officer did discharge his weapon," Cmdr. Michael Reid of the Fresno Police Department said.
The Fresno Police Department is now heading the investigation that involves a California Highway Patrol Officer and a man in his 30s.
Officers got a call about a car crash in the area at about 12:45 Saturday.
When they arrived they found this crash and a man with a gunshot wound.
Robert Turgeon heard it all happen.
"I did hear two gunshots and I looked over the fence and we had police officers drawn up on the car and the car was off on the side of the road," Turgeon said.
Police will not say what caused the original crash or what led them to fire on the man but those who were nearby the shooting are still shaken up.
"It was pretty intense, I didn't know what to do," Turgeon said.
The CHP officer was not hurt. He is on administrative leave pending the investigation.
