Fresno Unified board appoints new member

FRESNO, Calif.

The board voted 5 to 1 giving Christopher De La Cerda the highest scores out of the 4 candidates.

They say there was an "overwhelming" amount of support for De La Cerda. He's a former FUSD teacher.

Vang resigned in September amid controversy over whether he actually lived in the district he was elected to represent.

His replacement, De La Cerda, says his family gave him the courage to apply for Vang's seat.

"I'd like for the opportunity to serve as the board member on behalf of my children, but not just on behalf of my children but all the children in our community," De La Cerda said.

De La Cerda will be officially appointed at next week's board meeting.
