Volunteers help out at Poverello House

FRESNO, Calif.

"Just passing out food to people and seeing how happy they are makes me feel really good," said Maya Radcliffe.

This year, the 13 year-old wanted to make a difference by painting a mural for the non-profit's annual Thanksgiving celebration. She and dozens of other volunteers from her church in Turlock also spent the day stocking up on canned food supplies.

Staff members at Poverello House are hoping to collect about 1500 more turkeys before Thursday. "Last year we didn't reach our goal. Our goal was 2500 and we just didn't get there. So I am really hoping this year that we get there. It is one of our main staples throughout the whole year," said Kathryn Weakland.

Other organizations like Catholic Charities also spent Sunday collecting food in Northwest Fresno.
