30-year-old Melissa Dowd was an emergency medicine resident in the UC San Francisco-Fresno medical program.
The accident happened friday night at the intersection of Shepherd and Champlain.
Officers say she and another person were crossing the street, when she was hit.
Witnesses tried to perform CPR but she later died at the hospital.
The director of the UCSF Fresno medical program says she was an extraordinary person and will be missed.
"She had a long track record of walking the walk and talking the talk as far as serving those most in need from her work at CDC in Georgia to her work in Nairobi working with orphans with HIV," Dr. Jim Comes director of the emergency medical program at UCSF-Fresno said.
Action News interviewed Dowd in June for a story about first-year doctors. She told us she was from Virginia and wanted to be a trauma surgeon.
