The crash happened on Highway 99 near Ashlan just before 6 a.m. Saturday.
The CHP says the 35 year old victim lost control of his pick up truck and crashed into the center divider.
The man then got out of his truck.
Officers say a big rig driver tried to avoid the wreckage but didn't have enough time because of the foggy conditions.
The freightliner crashed into the pick-up and the driver. The Madera man died at the scene.
Investigators say the victim had alcohol in his system, which is believed to be a factor in the crash.
