CHP officer-involved shooting in Madera

FRESNO, Calif.

Investigators say the shooting happened in a neighborhood near Orchard and University Avenue Sunday night.

Detectives say an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer was following a man he believed to be a suspected drunk driver. Police say the CHP officer fired shots when he thought the man was armed.

ABC30 talked to neighbors who didn't want to be identified on camera, they described the moments after shots were fired.

"I stayed away from the window, I just felt very lucky to be alive."

Madera Police Chief Steve Fraizer says the CHP officer was not harmed.

The suspect was shot in the finger. He is expected to be okay.
