Jacinto City mayor dies after prolonged illness

JACINTO CITY, TX

Mayor Rachel C. Nunez passed away late Friday after a prolonged illness, according to Assistant City Manager Lon Squyres .

Nunez was elected Jacinto City mayor in 2011. She devoted much of her life to public service, including 11 years as a Jacinto City council member.

She also spent 30 years within the judicial system, serving as Harris County Deputy County Clerk from 1961 to 1973 and as chief clerk and translator for a Harris County Justice of the Peace from 1973 to 1991.

Nunez was a past president of Harris County Mayors and Council's Association, served on the Jacinto City Zoning Commission, was a past secretary to the Jacinto City Police Department Texas Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education, past liason -- mayor's aid -- between the community and the City of Jacinto City, past member of the Justice of the Peace and Constables Association, member of The Hispanic Forum with Galena Park Independent School District.

She was also a member of our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and president of the Helping Hands Board of Directors.

Nunez leaves behind a husband, J. Felix Hernandez, and two sons, Charles and David.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
