Abandoned, falling apart and dangerous -- an old motel in southeast Houston is no more, after a date with a wrecking crew Thursday morning.
The old Aries motel was on the mayor's list of buildings that had to go and its demolition was a welcome sight for people living nearby. The motel was in the Sunnyside neighborhood for 31 years. It had been vacant for three years and had worn its welcome with nearby residents. They say the two-story, 27 unit building was haven for criminal activity, like so many vacant buildings in the city of Houston.
In this area, where so many new homes are popping up, residents were happy to see the motel demolished.
"I'm glad it's torn down. I'm glad it's gone," resident Edward Guillory said. "Now I can see my mother's house on the next street."
Full demolition should take a week. The property is expected to go be up for sale this spring.
The mayor had a goal to tear down the six worst multi-family/commercial properties -- the Dirty Half-Dozen.
