FRESCA group postpones Fresno trash lawsuit

FRESNO, Calif.

The group called Fresnans For Clean Air (FRESCA), believes the city's plan to turn garbage collection over to a private company will lead to more air pollution. That is because the garbage trucks will be driving farther to another dump.

Spokesman Howard Watkins says the group will wait until the outcome of a petition drive to put the garbage question on the ballot is resolved. "In fighting the ordinance we are not trying to make the city spend a lot of money, but we need the city to understand how bad the ordinance is why they need to take a different route."

Watkins says the city Attorney's office asked the group to hold off on the lawsuit. If the petition drive to put solid waste privatization to a vote succeeds, the city could drop the whole idea since an election would cost one million dollars.
