"We have taken pride in being the safest community with the lowest crime rate in the County of Fresno. We want to keep our number one position in that," said Mayor Amarpreet Singh Dhaliwal.
The city has teamed up with the technology company Sebastian to install wireless cameras at locations in town and the major routes going in and out.
"If something does happen, then as the bad guys are leaving town, that image is captured, vehicle type, in some cases facial recognition," said Jack Shiner, the Business Development Coordinator with Sebastian.
The high mega-pixel cameras provide a 180 degree field of vision and can be monitored remotely. The footage can also be downloaded to a thumb drive.
The City of San Joaquin contracts its public safety services with the Fresno County Sheriff's Office and the deputy on patrol will be able to view the cameras at any time.
Some in town already feel safer, knowing the cameras are there. "I think it's the best way to have extra eyes on everything. Not just stores, not just businesses. I think every street should have one," said Rachel Rizo.
