Porterville's most recent pedestrian death was on Sunday when a man walking in the slow lane on Highway 190 was struck and killed by a car.
Last year pedestrian deaths doubled from what they were in 2011. Four people were killed by cars as they were trying to cross the street.
Porterville police are now using a $69 thousand traffic safety grant to help them reduce traffic-related deaths and educate drivers and pedestrians.
Dominic Barteau said, "We're going to be focusing on pedestrian enforcement as well as education so they're more aware."
Angie Rodriguez said, "I think it's a great idea it's going to help a lot I know a lot of people have been hit in the crosswalks."
Officers will also be using the grant to combat DUIs.
