Local animal group celebrates a major milestone

FRESNO, Calif.

The group marked the occasion with an adoption event at its facility in northwest Fresno Saturday.

Staff members found homes for about 10 animals and also offered vaccines with the help of some local animal shelters. The Hope Foundation says California spends more than $250 million a year to care for more than 1 million abandoned pets and more than half of those are eventually euthanized.

Executive Director Stacey Houk said, "What people typically don't realize is by spaying and neutering 1 animal you're actually saving 5, so the number can grow exponentially."

The foundation says it has many options for people who don't think they can afford to sterilize their pets, including surgeries for as low as 20 dollars.
