CHP's "Age Well Drive Smart" senior program

FRESNO, Calif.

The free program called "Age Well Drive Smart" is funded by a federal grant and focuses on keeping the roads safe.

The two hour long class is offered at c-h-p offices and senior centers all over the state. CHP officers address issues related to age and how their driving ability can be affected.

Sgt. Darren Greene of the CHP said, "A lot of seniors want to keep their independence. We want to emphasize, we're not here to take away your license. We want to keep everyone safe behind the wheel and this is one way to do it for this age group."

The elderly population is the fastest growing population in the state. Studies show that there will be more than six million residents age 65 and older in California by 2020.

Reports also show that seniors are responsible for fewer accidents than teenagers and drunk drivers.
