Margaret Thatcher funeral: Queen Elizabeth II will attend

LONDON

The queen and husband Prince Philip will attend the funeral, which is expected to draw dignitaries from around the world. The queen has not attended a prime minister's funeral since the death of Winston Churchill in 1965.

Churchill received a state funeral, which requires a Parliament vote. Though Thatcher's funeral will have the full military honors, it is not considered a state funeral.

Thatcher's funeral will be held at London's Saint Paul's Cathedral April 17. Before the funeral, Thatcher's coffin will lie overnight at the Houses of Parliament, and then travel on a horse-drawn gun carriage along a route lined by military personnel.

The televised funeral will be followed by a private cremation.

The former British prime minister died Monday at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke.
