People who are planning to move are being warned to look out for potential scammers.

The Department of Transportation and Texas Department of Motor Vehicles held a news conference in Houston to kick off National Moving Month. Consumers are urged to look out for illegal operators posing as moving companies.

Some scammers often hold goods hostage to get more payments from customers.

"They expect honest and reasonable treatment when they move, but all too often we hear from movers who were tricked by bad companies who disappeared with their goods," said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood.
