Officer involved shooting in Central Fresno

FRESNO, Calif.

The parking lot of the Motel Six near Olive and Crystal is where investigators say gang members fired about 30 rounds into a large crowd.

Fresno police say about a hundred people were gathered in a parking lot for a party just after 3:30 a.m.

Many were attending the Soul Brothers Motorcycle Run. The event draws thousands of bikers from around the state.

But detectives say it wasn't the bikers but several West Fresno gang members who started the violent fight.

"Several people pulled out firearms and began to fire into the crowd. One of the suspects involved in that shooting began to run from the location while firing into the crowd," Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.

Police say 27-year-old Anthony Wyatt is one of several people who fired into the crowd during the party. Police are still searching for several of the other suspects.

Investigators say Wyatt was running toward police with a gun in his hand when two officers shot him.

Chief Jerry Dyer says two of the officers shot at Anthony Wyatt after they saw him shoot into the crowd and then run.

After he was shot at the first time, Dyer says Wyatt ran unknowingly toward another officer.

Investigators held several people at the scene for questioning. Wyatt is the only person facing charges so far.

Investigators say 23 rounds were fired and a 28-year-old man was shot. He was treated and released from the hospital.

Cell phone video shot by Manuel Placencia shows the moments after gunfire flew across the Motel Six parking lot in West Central Fresno.

Placencia is a truck driver. He was parked for the night only a few feet away from the shootings.

"There was screaming everywhere, a lot of people were screaming. It just looked like it could have gotten out of control real easy," Placencia said.

Fresno police say they're now looking for other suspects who shot at the crowd.

"There were at least two other individuals who were armed with handguns and firing in this disturbance and there may be more. We know that just based on different shell casings that were left at the scene," Dyer said.

The two officers who fired their guns are on administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation.
