Valley residents participate in Bike to Work Day

FRESNO, Calif.

Cyclist Karl Quinn was one of many Kaiser Permanente employees that traded in a drive to work for a ride to work as part of the Bike to Work challenge.

"I think it's wonderful," said Quinn. "I think movement is one of the most powerful medicines that we have. It's cheap, it helps your brain, it helps your heart, your digestion. So I think it's wonderful. It's something I try to do as much as I can."

Kaiser Permanente set up a booth at the corner of Alluvial and Fresno for employees or other riders to stop, refuel and rest. More than 60 companies participated in the challenge.

Quinn said, "Doing it once or twice a month doesn't seem like a huge change, but it really is important."

The event is part of the Million Mile Challenge going on in Fresno this month, encouraging people to remember how great it is to ride a bike.

I Bike Fresno Founder Byron Watkins said, "I think a lot of people are like i could never ride to work it would be so difficult. But it's not that bad, most people don't live that far from work, most people are less than 5 miles from work."

Cycling enthusiasts say it also can help you save on those rising gas prices and parking can be easier. But they say, getting back on that bike also brings a lot of joy.

Watkins said, "It's fun to get outside and try something different, experience the roads in a different way."
