Fresno Police open fire on suspect after bike chase

FRESNO, Calif.

An investigation is underway after police shot at a man in Southeast Fresno.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday night on California near Van Ness. Authorities say 30-year-old Carlos Yepez was riding his bike when officers tried to stop him. Police say the suspect refused, and tried to get away.

At one point the suspect got off his bike and started running. When officers caught up to him, they worried about their safety and opened fire.

"The officers felt threatened, he's reaching into this pockets actually and they believed he's grabbing a handgun... so they fired one time at him... He did not have a weapon after all, he was trying to dump his drugs," said Joe Gomez, Fresno Police Department.

The suspect was not hit. He was arrested for violating his parole, drug possession and resisting arrest.
