Detectives got a call around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon. The victim was found shot and lying on a dirt road near his Smith Road home.
The 49-year-old man was described by friends as very hard working -- and was believed to be involved in a local neighborhood watch group, working to prevent metal thefts and burglaries.
Detectives with the sheriff's department are asking for anyone to come forward with any information.
