Cantaloupe producers start new safety program

Cantaloupe producers in California will launch a mandatory food safety program.

The program will require government audits of all cantaloupe production activities, including growing, harvesting and packing. Industry officials want to make sure consumers know eating cantaloupes is safe after they were linked to listeria outbreaks in recent years.

Three-quarters of all cantaloupes sold in the United States are grown in California.
