California voters may decide fate of new Madera casino

FRESNO, Calif.

The casino would be built by the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians near Avenue 18 and Highway 99. The location is controversial because it would be California's first Indian casino on non-tribal land.

Critics have filed a referendum to overturn Governor Brown's approval of the casino. They argue the plan is unfair and sets a bad precedent for off-reservation gaming.

The tribe argues that the land is historically important to them, and would be a economic boost for the area.
