Mexico blocks import of Foster Farms chicken from two Valley processing facilities

FRESNO, Calif.

The LA Times is reporting the Mexican government told the U.S. Department of Agriculture that it was removing from its list of approved exporters, two Foster Farms plants here in Fresno, and one in Livingston.

The ban by Mexico is believed to be the first time that country has blocked American imports because of a health alert.

The plants in question were identified by the USDA as likely origins of a salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 338 people across the U.S. since March.

The USDA allowed Foster Farms to continue operating the facilities after the company submitted and put in motion changes to their slaughter and processing.
