The California Department of Food and Agriculture announced that the Asian citrus psyllid quarantine in place in Tulare and Kern Counties has been expanded to a total of 888 square miles after three psyllids were found near Exeter, Lemon Cove, and Southeast Porterville.
The Asian citrus psyllid is an invasive species of concern because it can carry the disease huanglongbing, also known as citrus greening. All citrus trees and related species are susceptible to both the insect and the disease. There is no cure once a tree becomes infected -- and the disease will eventually kill the tree.
Residents with backyard citrus trees in the quarantine area are asked to not remove the fruit from the area.
Residents in the area who think they may have seen the Asian citrus psyllid are urged to call CDFA's Pest Hotline at 1-800-491-1899.
