A woman is dead after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 180 in Fresno County on Thursday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 7 p.m. near Grantland Avenue. The CHP said it received a call about a woman walking in and out of traffic on the westbound side of the highway. Officers said they responded to the scene and found the woman had been hit and killed.

The driver that hit the woman is cooperating with investigators.

"They tried to swerve at the last moment when they were able to see the party, but there wasn't enough time," said CHP Officer Joseph Bianchi.

The name of the woman who died has not been released, but CHP officials believe she was in her 60s.

Authorities said the young female driver will not face charges. They also said there are no street lights in that particular stretch of roadway, making it very dark for drivers.

The eastbound side of the 180 in that area was shut down during the investigation.
