Parlier man shot and killed; neighbor arrested

PARLIER, Calif.

Deputies are still piecing together the moments leading up to the shooting, but they think it may have to do with an ongoing dispute between the neighbors. However, deputies say they don't have a history of 911 calls to either of their homes.

Crime scene tape closed off 7th Street from one end to the other as investigators scoured two blocks of residential neighborhood taking testimony from witnesses. Family and friends have identified the victim as Artie Gomez -- a family man and a coach with the Panther Youth Football League in Parlier.

Abel Ruiz says he went to school with Gomez, and Gomez also coached his son.

"We rushed over here because we couldn't believe it that someone would shoot him," said Ruiz. "He's never gotten in a fight in his life, much less get shot."

The shooting took place around 3 p.m. Parlier police were the first to arrive on scene and found the victim inside his house with a gunshot wound to the chest.

"It appears that both our victim and suspect are neighbors. We don't know if there's an ongoing feud between the neighbors," said Lt. Mark Padilla with the Fresno County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff's deputies say the victim was shot in front of family members, and they are being questioned. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center by ambulance, where he later died.

Deputies say the suspect surrendered peacefully, and they are waiting for a search warrant to search the suspect's home for the weapon used in the crime. They say the suspect is facing a murder charge. He has only been identified as a Parlier man.
