Train collides with big rig in Fowler

FOWLER, Calif.

The crash happened around 2 p.m. at Manning Avenue and Golden State Boulevard.

The train smashed into the back part of the trailer that the truck was pulling. The truck driver had just left the Del Rey area and was heading to Bakersfield.

Authorities say the traffic lights were not working normally in the intersection because of a traffic project. The intersection was controlled by a four-way stop during the accident.

The truck driver says he was headed west and made it over the tracks when the rail arms came down. He was stopped at the intersection, but police say he just miscalculated how long his trailer was.

The accident has been redirecting traffic. Drivers say traffic wasn't bad, just a little inconvenient.

"Traffic coming from Fowler was OK, but down here coming off the freeway heading toward Reedley, it was pretty far down; yeah it was bad," said Fowler resident Sukhbir Nijjer.

Fowler police say the truck driver could be held responsible for damages if he's found at fault.

The trailer contained juice boxes, but none of them spilled onto the ground.

Police asked drivers to avoid the intersection while the accident scene was cleared. Manning Avenue was closed but was expected to be back open by 7 p.m.
