Fresno Police say a teenage girl was crossing Shields Avenue, near Harrison after 6:30 Wednesday morning when she was hit by a car. They say she was wearing dark clothes and walking in a poorly lit area and not in a cross walk.
The driver said he tried to avoid hitting her but could not. He is being questioned by police, but is reportedly very cooperative.
Investigators could not identify the girl, but they think she may have been walking to a bus stop. Dailey Elementary School is nearby, but they said she was too old to attend that school.
Road should reopen between 8:30 and 9 a.m.
