Volunteer firefighter struck, killed by train in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH

Firefighter Edwin Jeff Wentzel was hit by a train in Pittsburgh on Saturday. Wentzel was out with search-and-rescue crews to find Ruth Ann Mullenix. She's been missing since Monday.

On Saturday, crews said volunteers gathered to continue the search, when Wentzel accidentally stepped into the path of an oncoming train.

"The family and friends of Ruth offer our sincere condolences," said Dawn Weichler, a friend of the missing woman. "There's not much more we can say. I mean he lost his life for us."

It's not clear why Wentzel didn't hear the train, but it appears he never saw it coming.

Wentzel's chief said he had 30 years of firefighting experience. He leaves behind a wife, children and grandchildren.
